Philosophy of Politics Department (PPD) has existed at the Institute of Philosophy since 1994. At the beginning Prof. Barbara A. Markiewicz worked at the Department. From 1999 at the PPD has worked Agnieszka Nogal (Associate Professor) who is now a head of the PPD. In 2007 Rafał Wonicki (Ph.D.) has joined to the PPD and in 2016 we welcome on board Magdalena Gawin (Ph.D). As a part of bilateral agreement with Civic Education Project (Czech Republic) with our Department were cooperated Erica Benner (Oxford) and Karen Ford (Manchester).
At the PPD apart from the optional course for the student of Institute of Philosophy there are conducted M.A and research seminars. At the academic year 2004/2005 the PPD indicated also the seminar in English. Currently we cooperate with University of Leiden (Universiteit Leiden) in a research project: Democratic Secrecy. A Philosophical Study of the Role of Secrecy in Democratic Politics, granted by European Research Council (2015-2020).
We lead regular lectures and tutorials (for philosophy students, bioethics students and for students of Warsaw International Studies in Philosophy) as well as research seminars, M.A. and PhD seminars. Philosophical investigations of researchers affiliated at the PPD for many years has been concentrated on the relation among individual, his/her status as a citizen and form of political community. This relation determines main scientific fields such as: human and citizens rights, theories of justice, civil society and political identity, public space and its boundaries, legitimacy of power, biopolitics, historical shapes of political communities, state and its contemporary transformations.
The PPD was a host and co-host of numerous of seminars and conferences, among other things, the Reason and the social order (2000; with the IF UJ); Justice – J. Rawls’ conception (2000; with the Institute of Political Studies, PAN); The Crisis of Political Identity (2004; international seminar); I Forum of Political Philosophy (17.02. 2006). For many years in cooperation of Institute of Political Studies (ISP PAN) we co-organize national conferences. The last one was dedicated to irrational aspects of politics: Political Spectrum, Spirits and Vampires -Political Projections and their Philosophical Attempt at Interpretation (2017).
Additionally, the PPD in cooperation with Institute of Political Studies (ISP PAN) has co-edited journal Civitas. Studies in Philosophy of Politics especially numbers concerning Political Culture (18/2016), Revolution (15/2013), European Union (9/2006). As a team we lastly have published a book called Human and Citizens Rights in a Globalized World (in Polish and English version), which was the result of grant financed by National Center of Science (NCN).
